Getting to know Al Ain
Al Ain lies inland in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, against the Omani border, and grew around six oases whose falaj irrigation channels still water the palm groves. The oases, the forts and the archaeological sites of Hili and Jebel Hafeet are listed together by UNESCO as the Cultural Sites of Al Ain.
The city is spread out and low-rise, laid out around roundabouts and tree-lined avenues, which earned it the name of garden city. Local buses run by the Integrated Transport Centre take the Hafilat card, as in Abu Dhabi, and intercity buses reach the capital and Dubai. Jebel Hafeet, the mountain south of the city, is reached by a winding road that climbs to its summit; Al Ain Zoo and the UAE University campus are among the city's other landmarks.
