Getting to know Dubai

Dubai is the only city in the country with a metro. The Red Line follows Sheikh Zayed Road from the airport and Deira down to Jebel Ali and Expo City; the Green Line runs through the older quarters on both banks of the Creek. The Dubai Tram serves the Marina, JBR and Al Sufouh and connects with the metro and the Palm Jumeirah monorail. A single Nol card pays for metro, tram, buses and water buses, all run by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

Across the Creek, wooden abras still shuttle between the Deira souks and Bur Dubai, the quickest way between the two old centres. Most visitors arrive at Dubai International (DXB), whose Terminals 1 and 3 have their own metro stations; Al Maktoum International at Dubai South handles a growing share of flights. Road tolls (Salik) apply on the main highways, and the working week runs Monday to Friday, with Friday afternoons shorter in the public sector.
