Getting to know Sharjah
Sharjah shares a continuous urban area with Dubai and Ajman, and many of its residents commute to Dubai: the roads between the two cities are among the busiest in the country at peak hours. Local buses and taxis are run by the Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority; the main bus station at Al Jubail also handles intercity services to Dubai and the northern emirates.
The emirate calls itself the cultural capital of the UAE, and the old centre bears it out: the Heart of Sharjah heritage quarter, the Museum of Islamic Civilization, the Arts Area and the Central Souk, with its blue-tiled wind towers. Al Majaz and Al Qasba line the lagoons, and Sharjah International Airport, a low-cost hub, sits on the eastern edge of the city. Sharjah applies stricter rules than its neighbours: alcohol is not sold, and a public decency code covers dress.
